The Real Reason Why I Don’t Get Offended

I’m down at the beach stringing up my gorgeous pink hammock between two trees when an older man stopped and stared at me in awe. He asked me what I was doing, to which I explained I was putting up my hammock. He said he was “simply amazed”. He lingered to watch and I finally asked what was so amazing about it. He plainly said, “Because you’re a girl!”.

I laughed and waved goodbye as he went about his day to ponder how a girl could do such a thing. I didn’t give it another thought until I relayed the story to a friend later that day.

“That is so rude!” exclaimed my friend. “That’s so degrading to say that to you,”’ she continued, clearly feeling outrage that someone interrupted my beautiful, peaceful day to share such an offensive opinion.

Her reaction to my story took me aback. I shared it as an amusing story, but she didn’t see it that way at all. Realizing that I didn’t seem angry at all, she asked me, “Didn’t that upset you? What did you say?”

“Nothing,” I said nonchalantly. “I laughed and he went on his way.”

“But WHY? Didn’t that offend you?”. She looked baffled, and if anything, angry that I did nothing to stand up for the entire female population — not to mention every…
