When he said, “you can’t tell that story to people,” I immediately knew I had to share it — and why.

I understood what he meant. Telling this story would be an unflattering move. It would make me look either uber-pretentious or extremely incompetent.

To me, it would simply unmask some details of my childhood that would shed light on this quirky girl’s odd ways.

Boiling Eggs

I was 45 when I boiled my first egg. After I become enamored with deviled eggs, I decided they looked easy enough to make at home. How hard could it be? I bought the ingredients, printed a recipe and dug right in.

Step 1: Boil 6 eggs.

What? How the heck do you boil eggs? I’ve never done that before. I skimmed down to step 2, which was already telling me what to do with the boiled eggs. But there was no instruction on HOW to boil the eggs. I panicked.

Why would they assume I knew how to boil eggs? I had so many questions. How much water? How long did I boil it for? When should I put the eggs in the water? How would I know they were done? How do I get the shell off? Was there some special technique to…
